Date: Thu, 4 Jun 1998 12:41:44 -0700 From: Jon Subject: Re: non-4AD recommendations sought > Ecstasy of St. Theresa > I discovered them a few years back with the "Fluidtrance Centauri" EP on Free records. It's a tasty mix of minimal low-hum guitar and bass which kinda morphs into a barrage of psychedelic effects. I would liken this EP to Lush meets Pink Flloys meets the first Moonshake e.p. (the Creation one). This EP was recorded at a Peel Session. They were kinda vague and hard to find info. on back in 93 when I found this release and when the full album was released I had a hard time finding it, I finally dug it up while in London. The full album is called "Free-D (original soundtrack), and whether is truly is a soundtrack to anything is up for answer. It does kind of have a "soundtrack" fell to it, sparse vocals, a bit more of a concet album with a spacy continuity to it. There is some produciton from Guy Fixsen if that lends any insight (Moonshake, Laika, MBV, Boo Radleys, Stereolab). I saw another EP "Astralvista" recently but have yet to pick it up, it looks like a remix from Free-D with help from Bandulu and Disco Inferno. I really liked the "Fluidtrance" EP when I got it, and seeing your inquiry prompted me to pop it in the CD player. Listening to it, I think it's still pretty great and wonder why I don't listen to it more? (expect I have too many other things in line waiting to be listened to). Recommended for any 4AD fan of Lush,MBV and the like. Jon
Some words from Clairecords site re reissue of "Susurrate" album of the band:
FERN 014 - The Ecstasy of St. Theresa - Susurrate CD.Clairecords is proud to present the re-release of The Ecstasy of St. Theresa's Susurrate. An album of utter necessity and urgency. An album marking the end of the shoegazing heyday of the early 90's, and blossoming forth a brilliant band. 8 tracks of sheer sonic bliss; grinding, assaultive, woozy guitars; nearly-inaudible breathy vocals; frenetic drumming very reminiscent of the best of Colm O'Ciosoig (MBV). An underrated and unnoticed masterpiece. This re-release of Susurrate has been remastered to a new level of sonic brilliance, much unlike the original release which was unfortunately mixed quite badly. However, it now shimmers out of your stereo, slamming you right back into the aural glory of the early 90's.
