http://www.shmooze.net/pwcasual/zines/exclaim/reviews/march-1999/ok-13 The Stone EP is the final document from Fibreforms, an instrumental East Lansing, Michigan trio whose 1995 record, Treedrums, left critics agape at their hypnotic, impressionistic blend of Fourth World ambience and freeform guitar experimentation. This five-track EP will only leave fans wanting more. From the stately waltz and intricate guitar patterns on "Gryphons" to sampled crackling interference and swaying percussive swing of the title track to the Asian-influenced circular drones of "Kohinoor," the Stone EP is ambient music at its most sublime. Add in the haunting sound of bounkam, a single reed horn from Upper Volta that is woven into all of the songs and you have a record that creates its own universe of time and space. Kiln is the solo project of ex- Fibreform member, cfrill. The opening track, "Kef.graft2," sets the tone with its buzzing, overlapping, electronic clicks and tics. "Neuron" fuses dubby electronics and gorgeous Kraftwerk lulling waves, while "Sonor" ventures into Seefeel territory and "Cennan" is FSA guitar washes. "Hidden System" is Aphex Twin circa Ambient Works Vol.2. Nonetheless, an impressive debut. Meanwhile, a full-length is expected from the other ex-Fibreforms members soon.
