Just as yourself, I'm into independent music. As you are aware, it's hard to find. Give rucds.GEMM.com a try - I never fail to find what I need and often it comes very cheap. |

Fila Brazillia: A touch of Cloth (Tritone) (try http://www.tritone.co.uk)
Fila Brazillia have been steadily releasing some of the
finest most original and experimental music to come from these
Isles in the 1990s. Their style is almost impossible to pin down,
but whether it verges towards the ambient or more dub-influenced,
a staple element of funk presses on all sides. ‘A Touch Of Cloth’
their latest offering serves up 12 aesthetically pleasing tracks
which pretty much defy any sensible categorization. It exudes a
brash confidence from a band prepared to push their finely
refined sound to the outer limits, embracing and encompassing the
funkiest, most eclectic sounds of the twentieth century.
Quite simply, No one else in this galaxy creates songs like
‘one ridden pony’, which opens in a mysterious dub style before
metamorphasizing into a full-on funk work out of Latino trumpets,
jazzy keyboards and syncopated vocals. This is music of
incredible imagination, and musical accomplishment which deserves
a place in anyone’s record collection, sitting comfortably
alongside Herbie hancock, Sly stone and Kraftwerk. Truly music to
restore the faith in disciples of dance music everywhere. This
album will be heard blasting from the speakers from the great
dancefloor in the sky, where God truly is a DJ.
Steve Cobby and Dave McSherry are Fila Brazillia and that's
about all we need to know. The music speaks for its self and
that, it seems, is the way the band likes it. An underground
following is building for this group, who may be known more for
their remixes than actual album recordings on the U.K. label
Pork. This will change! Remixes for the likes of Radiohead, Busta
Rhymes, Unkle and Mixmaster Morris (complete listing can be found
at http://www.pork.co.uk/html/info.html) to name a few have
resulted in tracks that always bring a new twist on the original.
Their remix of "Awesome Wells" turns the song into a down tempo
shuffle full of the funk you would expect from a Fila mix! Check
out their new label Tritone and web site at www.tritone.co.uk.
You can even peep a 360-degree view of their stuido set up.

Hull-based duo Fila Brazillia are the most popular and
acclaimed of the noted Pork Recordings stable. Formed in 1991 by
producers Steve Cobby and Dave McSherry, Fila followed Cobby's
association with Ashley & Jackson, a moderately successful
pop/dance group signed to Big Life! which went belly up as the
label began demanding more and more pop and less dance. Returning
to his native Hull from Manchester, Cobby met DJ/dabbler Dave
Pork, and the two forged a creative alliance which continues to
this day. Hooking up with McSherry to form Fila, the group's
first 12-inch, "The Mermaid," was released that same year on
Pork's fledgling imprint (formed, actually, specifically for the
occasion), gaining instant acclaim among DJs and headphonauts
alike for its innovative fusion of funk, dub, house, hip-hop, and
acid jazz. The group followed their debut single with a string of
full-length releases (Old Codes, New Chaos, Maim That Tune and
Black Market Gardening among them) which were instrumental in
building Pork's reputation as one of the most consistent and
respected of England's vast ocean of underground
breakbeat/trip-hop labels. More recent releases have integrated
elements of pop and drum'n'bass on a number of tracks. Fila's rep
has also translated into a number of acclaimed remixes, including
Lamb's "Cotton Wool," the Orb's "Toxygene," and DJ Food's
"Freedom" (over a dozen of which were featured on the two-disc
collection Brazilification.) In addition to Fila, Cobby is also
an active member of other Pork stable acts such as Solid Doctor
(his solo guise) and Heights of Abraham, both of which have
released a number of full-length recordings. — Sean Cooper
