NEW MUSIC EXPRESS:
Senor Coconut Y Su Conjunto
El Baile Alemбn / My Life With Jesus
(Multicolor / Mille Plateaux)
It's hard to know which of these records is more blasphemous.
OK, Geez'N'Gosh have mechanical Christ artwork, brutal replicant
gospel and mashed-up monks. But Seсor Coconut (there is, you
suspect, no 'Conjunto') brainwashes Kraftwerk's finest songs into
wearing the ruffled shirt and fruit-filled headdress of Latin
American cabaret fun. Needless to say, Uwe Schmidt, man of
pseudonyms behind both recordings, must fear for his mortal soul.
The religious lunacy of 'My Life With Jesus' is ostensibly
the more serious artwork - gyrating behind the self-appointed
label 'clickhouse', it's a terse funk of well-oiled glitches and
blips. Add deformed gospel hysteria and distorto-soul and it's
Moby for machines, although unlikely to advertise anything except
mental health initiatives. 7/10
'El Baile Alemбn' ('The German Dance') is, however, more
perplexing, something that people who are post-everything -
including rational thought - might find pleasant accompaniment to
a couple of motor-oil martinis.
Inspired by Schmidt's residence in Santiago, it's hardly a
taxing concept, yet instead of sinking into novelty territory -
Elvis impersonator sings Joy Division! Hilarious! - Seсor Coconut
has genuine interpretative gifts. A cha-cha-cha 'Neon Lights'
becomes the last drag around the dancefloor on a Mexican Saga
holiday; 'Autobahn' rattles a maraca in the name of merengue,
while 'Showroom Dummies' could be lifted straight from the
Tortoise archives. All the same, 'Music Non Stop' has rarely
sounded like more of a threat. 7/10
