  • STATE RIVER WIDENING
    Unsung Couples
    (Gold Hole)

Funny how things change. When we were kids the only abstract entertainment we had was from a strange tripped-out crew called BARK PSYCHOSIS and maybe a bit of TALK TALK madness if MARK HOLLIS was particularly pissed off with his record company. Now you can hardly move for bands casually disregarding the rules of the corporate pop game and sitting around in huddles making fantastic records, scarcely caring if they sell more than about five copies.

Unsung Couples' is a case in point, a vigorous instrumental piece that still sounds like a marvellously happy accident, all flickering guitars and luscious rhythms and bold musical strokes which combine to deliciously hypnotic effect. Overall? Kinda like a really stoned MOGWAI massaging SIMON & GARFUNKEL's tired little feet, he lied sensationally.

    STATE RIVER WIDENING
    LONDON, JULY 1999
Hi, Thanks for checking out the SRW web-site courtesy of Rocket Girl.
    Some general information:

State River Widening comprises David Sheppard (guitar, bass, keyboards, melodica, mallet instruments), Keiron Phelan (guitar, multi-various keyboards, occasional bass, mallet instruments, flutes and so on) and Jon Steele (drums etc). Louise Clarke creates the visuals for SRW records. The band have been augmented on a couple of occasions by keyboardist/super-eight aficianado Andrew Cannon and recording engineer Colin Peter.

State River Widening were formed in May 1998 by David and Keiron with the intention of fusing acoustic instruments and resonant analogue technology to create `organic-mechanical` recordings that would encapsulate the duos` enthusiasms for systems music, avant-folk-classicism and the pastoral end of Cologne krautrock/Chicago post-rock.

Live takes, minimal production concerns and an emphasis on `feel` and atmosphere characterise these recordings.

SRW make records in a large wood and wrought iron works building adjacent to a tiny studio (Keep Calm) in south-west London, close to the river...

State River Widening releases to date: Unsung Couples/Interlaken - 7" single on Gold Hole (Gole 002) Will Our Children Thank Us - compilation album on Foundry (fr002) featuring SRW (Moriko Mori Shoots The Make-Believe Ballroom) and The Wisdom Of Harry (another ensemble-featuring David Sheppard), amongst other fine artists.

    Meanwhile.... Here`s what`s happening:

The debut SRW LP (titled simply State River Widening) will be out on Rocket Girl at the end of September. Look out for some gorgeous packaging.

Before that there will be a 3-track 7" single on Liquefaction Empire (lead off by Your Chance Ended There - none of the tracks appear on the album) - again rather sumptuously packaged. This should be in the shops in the second week of August.

SRW played their first ever live show on July 16th at the Rocket Girl night at Camden Town`s HQ club. The band played a set of unrecorded material. It was a success, though further live plans are somewhat fluid. If the band does tread the boards again their inention is to perform something entirely different. They are also keen to get more involved with films. Look out for developments on this front.

Future plans include 2 split singles. The first will appear on the French label Debut at the end of the year. The other band is Ellis Island Sound (another David Sheppard project). The second split is still in the planning stages but will hopefully feature the German band Hessen and will hit the shops early in the new millenium. There may also be a record of some kind on Beau Rivage (a German label) some time in 2000.

Thanks for stopping by. Bye for now...
